Subject options

The National Curriculum sets out the subjects to be taught at school. There have  been many changes over the last few years. You may not be familiar with all the subjects and types of qualification currently on offer to your son/daughter. You can find out more about The National Curriculum on the Direct Gov website.

There are three compulsory subjects that your son/daughter will have to study in Year 10 & 11:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science

There are a number of subjects young people will also study, but not neccesarily take an exam in. All schools have to offer:

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Careers Education
  • Citizenship
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Religious Studies
  • Sex & Relationship Education
  • Work-related Learning.

Parents/carers can choose to withdraw their child from all or part of the religious education curriculum and the non-statutory elements of sex and relationships education.

Some schools may include other compulsory subjects.

In addition to the compulsory subjects your son or daughter will make choices from a range of other subjects offered by their school. Their school will tell you what is on offer. However your so /daughter’s school must provide at least one course in four subject areas. The four subject areas are:

  • Arts (Art and Design, Drama, Music, Media Arts)
  • Design and Technology
  • Humanities (History, Geography)
  • Modern Foreign Languages
