As part of our Connexions service for young people, our contracts with both Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent local authorities incorporate the requirement for us to deliver 3 specific statutory duties on their behalf. These statutory duties are identified in the Employment and Training Act (1973) and the Learning and Skills Act (2000) namely:
1. Section 8 of the Employment and Training Act 1973 (amended by the Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act 1993):
To assist persons undergoing relevant education to decide
and to assist persons ceasing to undergo relevant education to obtain such employments, training and education.
2. Section 114 of the Learning and Skills act 2000:
To provide or secure the provision of services which will encourage, enable or assist, (directly or indirectly) effective participation by young people in education and training.
This duty extends the Connexions remit beyond careers education and guidance into delivery of a wider range of services designed to improve levels of participation and training.
3. Section 139A-C of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 (formerly Section 140):
To arrange assessments for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities as defined by the Act to assist their transition to post-16 education and training opportunities.
