Staying safe
Being with a lot of new people in unfamiliar surroundings is an exciting experience – but don’t take unnecessary risks with your personal safety or the safety of your possessions. Staying alert, taking a few precautions and being sensible can make all the difference.
Staying safe in student accommodation
- Check that any gas or electrical equipment is safe - inexpensive carbon monoxide alarms are available from supermarkets and DIY stores.
- Lock your door and close your windows when you go out.
- Don’t leave money, debit / credit cards or keys on view.
- Leave a light or the radio on when you go out.
- Mark your property – computer, TV and other electronic equipment – with your student ID number or your home postcode.
- Never tell anyone your bank PIN – and don’t write it down in an obvious place
- If your phone is lost or stolen, ring 08701 123 123 to immobilise it.
- If you have a car, lock it and keep valuables in the boot. Don’t leave stuff on show.

Staying safe when you’re out and about
- There’s safety in numbers – if you’re out on foot, walk in groups.
- Avoid dodgy short cuts such as those that cross waste ground or dark parks.
- Avoid using outdoor cash points – cash back in shops is a safer option.
- Tell friends where you’re going and when you expect to be back. If your plans change, let them know.
- Don’t use your iPod on the street – you won’t hear traffic dangers or an attacker.
- Never accept a lift from a stranger or someone you don’t know very well.
- Don’t accept a lift from a friend who’s been drinking or taking drugs.
- Use taxi companies you know and book these in advance – never jump into a taxi without first checking who it’s for. Don’t hail street taxis.
- Don’t accept drinks from strangers.
- Don’t leave drinks unattended – they may get spiked.
- If you feel uncomfortable or uneasy about someone, move away and try to join a group of people. That gut feeling is usually right.
- Look out for each other. Stay with your mates - don't let anyone wander off.
