People who can help

The options you choose in Year 9 not only affect how you spend the next two years in school - they may also affect the job or college course you do in the future. It may sound scary, but remember - by taking control of your education, YOU can
shape the way YOU want YOUR future to be.

The choices are yours, but most people look for advice when they’re making important decisions. Here are some people who can help you:

Your parents / carers, family and friends probably know you better than anyone. They can help you focus on what you’re good at / your likes & dislikes / what you’re like as a person. Share your ideas with them – they might have some useful suggestions

Teachers and careers co-ordinators know what’s involved in the subjects they teach and know how you like to study. They also have a very good knowledge of all the GCSEs, Diplomas and other courses the school has on offer and what might suit you.

Special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs). If you have a learning difficulty or disability that affects your studies, your SENCO would be a good person to talk to about your future plans.

Your Connexions Personal Adviser (PA) is specially trained to help you make informed decisions about your future. They can help you explore all your options and give impartial information about subjects and qualifications and their suitability for the career you’re considering. Your Connexions PA visits your school on a regular basis. You can ask your form tutor to organise a meeting for you, or you may be able to just pop-in at break times for a chat and to use the careers resources. Connexions PAs are also available on Parents Evenings, and at your local Connexions Centre.  Parents are also welcome.
