Going to Uni or HE college

Going to university or HE college is a very exciting time. Depending on where you decide to study, you may be moving away from home and needing to find a new place to live while you’re studying.

However - it’s not compulsory to study a long way from home! With the rising costs of living, nearly a quarter of all students now choose to live at home

If you’re looking for student accommodation, there are lots of options open to you. You might decide to rent:

  • a room at the university’s ‘Halls of Residence’
  • a student flat or a room in a student house on campus
  • a room in a student house off-campus
  • lodgings (where you would live with your landlord or landlady)

There’s a wealth of information for young people who’re planning to go to university or HE college at www.heguide.co.uk. Check out the Student Life section for information on accommodation and living away from home. Check out the Cash Facts section for information on student finance - including the non-repayable Maintenance Grant that helps students with living costs (where ever they choose to live).

If you’ve been living in care, you may be able to extra help with finance and accommodation while you’re at University or HE College. Find out more in the Leaving Care section
