Sending a letter of application
Some adverts ask you to ‘apply in writing.’ In this kind of letter, you should focus on the job you’re applying for.
You should:
- Use the person’s name if you know it and end the letter ‘Yours sincerely’. If you don’t know the persons’ name, start with ‘Dear Sir / Madam’ and end with ‘Yours faithfully’.
- Explain why you’re writing and include the job title and date. (eg. I would like to apply for the Apprentice IT Technician vacancy (ref: JB 59/AIT) which was advertised in the ‘Jobs Weekly’ on the 15th May 2009)
- Briefly explain your current situation. (eg, “I will be completing my GCSEs at Elmwood High School in July 2009. “)
- Briefly explain why you’re suitable for the job (eg “My career ambition is to work in ICT. Last year I completed a successful and enjoyable two week work placement with RXC Ltd, where I gained a good insight into the field of website development”
- Say that you’re enclosing a copy of your CV which gives more details about your qualifications, experience and skills.
- Finish by saying that you look forward to hearing from them.
- Sign your letter.
- Keep a copy for future reference.
- Remember to enclose your CV.
Top tip: Do a rough copy first and then write your letter neatly or use a word processer
