Age and type of work 

If you’re under 13, you’re only allowed to be employed in special circumstances with permission from your local authority. This could include things such as acting, modelling or a paid ballet performance. Permission would only be given if your education wouldn’t suffer as a result of your work.

If you’re age 13 – 16, you’re allowed to be employed to do light work - but it must not expose you to any danger or moral harm.

You can work in situations such as:

  • a paper round
  • a riding stables or kennels
  • a shop or supermarket
  • a café or restaurant
  • a hairdressing salon
  • television or theatre (as long as you’ve got a performance licence)


You can’t

  • work in hazardous areas such as building sites or places with heavy machinery
  • drive or ride vehicles or machinery (including farm machinery)
  • work on a ship
  • work in a betting shop
  • serve alcohol
